She was born a slave in Raleigh, NC in 1858 and among her achievements are:
- Earning a Masters in Mathematics
- Published the book: A Voice from the South by a Black Woman of the South
- Adopted 7 children
- Attended Columbia University
- Became the first African American woman to earn a Doctorate of Philosophy form the Sorbonne University in Paris.
- Served as President of Frelinghuysen University
- Died at the age of 105 in Washington DC and is buried in Raleigh NC
